A virtuoso of the traditional Japanese transverse harp known as the koto and an eclectic performer who continually challenges conventions,  Michiyo Yagi has devoted much of her career to making music that sounds simultaneously ancient and futuristic. She has developed extended techniques and incorporated electronics while taking care to preserve the uniquely resonant character of the koto in its most primal form. In addition to performing her own compositions either unaccompanied, with her own jazz-oriented trio, or with her koto quartet Talon, Yagi is widely known as the premier improviser on her instrument.

Born in Aichi Prefecture, Yagi began learning classical koto from her mother, a koto teacher, and exhibited a natural flair for improvisation from an early age. In her early 20’s she moved to Tokyo to study with Tadao Sawai, the leading koto performer-composer of post-war Japan, and his wife Kazue Sawai, also a prominent koto player. Yagi began her professional career as a member of their respective koto ensembles.

During a tenure as Visiting Professor of Music at Wesleyan University in Connecticut, U.S.A., Yagi premiered numerous compositions for koto and became influenced by maverick American composers such as John Cage, Christian Wolff, Conlon Nancarrow and John Zorn. Shortly thereafter Yagi began writing her own compositions, and Zorn released Yagi’s debut CD Shizuku (1999) on his Tzadik label.

Yagi has since released numerous albums including Yural (2001) with her own multi-koto ensemble; Seventeen (2005), entirely performed on the giant 17-string bass koto; Live! at SuperDeluxe (2006), a trio performance with Ingebrigt Håker Flaten and Paal Nilssen-Love; Head On (2008) and Volda (2010) with Peter Brötzmann and Nilssen-Love; Reflexions (2010) with Elliott Sharp; Soul Stream (2015) with Joe McPhee, Lasse Marhaug and Nilssen-Love; and Angular Mass (2015), a trio with Marhaug and Nilssen-Love.

Dōjō, Yagi’s “power duo” with drummer Tamaya Honda, has released Ichi No Maki [Vol. 1] (2014), featuring guests Nils Peter Molvaer and Nilssen-Love, and Ni No Maki [Vol. 2] (2017) with guests Akira Sakata and Keisuke Ōta. Into The Forest (2019) features Yagi’s vocals in addition to her instrumental work. In February 2023 Yagi released Bibi, a duo recording featuring composer Dai Fujikura on synthesizer. Hyperborea, an ambient album co-produced by guitarist Eivind Aarset, and Izayoi, the debut recording of her koto quartet Talon, are scheduled for release in 2026.

Yagi’s koto has been featured in ex-Judy & Mary guitarist-singer Takuya's band, and she has recorded with neo-prog rocker Steven Wilson (Porcupine Tree), J-pop idol Ayumi Hamasaki, singer-songwriter Angela Aki, singer-actress Kō Shibasaki, and the psychedelic pop band Tempalay.

 

Yagi has appeared at numerous international music festivals including Moers, Born Creative, Kongsberg Jazz, Punkt, Újbuda Jazz, Musique Actuel Victoriaville, Archipel, Bang on a Can, Vision, Instal, Jazztopad Wrocław, , Jazztopad in New York, Fuji Rock, Musique Action, Music Unlimited, Météo-Mulhouse, and Sons d’hiver. In 2023 Yagi presented an evening of her music at the Pierre Boulez Saal in Berlin, was chosen as “Featured Artist” at Cologne Jazzweek, and appointed “Artist in Residence” at Jazzfestival Saalfelden.

 

Michiyo Yagi is the recipient of the 2026 Aichi Prefecture Arts & Culture Award.

邦楽はもちろん、前衛ジャズや現代音楽からロックやポップまで幅広い活動を続けているハイパー箏（こと）奏者。

​

故・沢井忠夫、沢井一恵に師事。NHK邦楽技能者育成会卒業後、ウェスリアン大学客員教授として渡米中、ジョン・ケージやジョン・ゾーンらに影響を受ける。ゾーンのプロデュースによるソロ・アルバム『Shizuku』（1999年）を皮切りに、自己の箏アンサンブルとの『ゆらる』（2001年）、全編17絃のソロ作『Seventeen』（2005年）、インゲブリグト・ホーケル・フラーテン（b）とポール・ニルセン・ラヴ（ds）という欧州切ってのリズム・セクションと共演した『ライヴ！アット・スーパーデラックス』（2006年）をリリース。2006年に欧州フリー・ジャズ界の重鎮ペーター・ブロッツマン（s）及びニルセン・ラヴとトリオを結成し、『Head On』（2008年）と『ヴォルダ』（2010年）をリリース。2010年にはエリオット・シャープ（g）とのデュオ作『リフレクションズ』を発表。

2014年秋、本田珠也（ds）とのパワー・デュオ《道場》のデビュー盤『壱ノ巻』がリリースされ、月刊『ミュージック・マガジン』の《2014年度ベスト・ジャズ・アルバム》１位を受賞。2015年にはノルウェーの PNLレーベルからニルセン・ラヴ、ラッセ・マーハウグ（electronics）との『Angular Mass』、同メンバーにジョー・マクフィー（s、tp）が加わった『Soul Stream』という２枚のフリー・ジャズ作を発表。2017年3月、坂田明（s、cl）と太田惠資（vln）をゲストに迎えた『道場／弐ノ巻』、八木／ホーケル・フラーテン／ニルセン／ラヴの10年ぶりの２作目『ディケイド』を同時発売。初めて自らのヴォーカルを含む自作曲集『森の中へ』を2019年にリリース。2023年、現代音楽作曲家・藤倉大との共作『微美』がノルウェーのJazzland Recordingsからリリース。2026年には同レーベルからアンビエント・アルバム『Hyperborea』、更に箏カルテットMichiyo Yagi Talonのデビュー作『Izayoi〜十六夜』が予定されている。

世界有数の即興演奏家と頻繁に共演するかたわら、俳優で朗読家の竹下景子、プログレッシヴ・ロック・アーティストのスティーヴン・ウィルソン（Porcupine Tree）、アコーディオン奏者coba、更に柴咲コウ、浜崎あゆみ、Tempalay、アンジェラ・アキやTakuya（元Judy & Mary）といったJ-POPアーティストの録音やステージにも参加。ラヴィ・シャンカール、パコ・デ・ルシアらと共に英国のワールドミュージック誌Songlinesの《世界の最も優れた演奏家50人》に選ばれている。

Moers（ドイツ）、Vision（米国）、Jazztopad及びKrakow Jazz Autumn（ポーランド）、Kongsberg Jazz（ノルウェー）、Újbuda Jazz（ハンガリー）、Music Unlimited（オーストリア）、Instal（イギリス）、Sons d’hiver及びMétéo-Mulhouse（フランス）、Montreux Jazz（スイス）、フジロック、Jazz Art せんがわ等など数多くの音楽フェスティヴァルに出演。2023年度Jazzfestival Saalfeldenでは“Artist in Residence”、Cologne Jazzweekでは“Featured Artist”に抜擢された。同年、現代音楽の殿堂として知られるベルリンのPierre Boulez Saalでリサイタル、2025年にはニューヨークのLincoln Centerでリサイタル。また、藤倉大が音楽監督を勤める東京芸術劇場主催の現代音楽の祭典Born Creative Festival（通称“ボンクリ”）では4年続けて大きくフィーチャーされている。

近年はオリジナル曲を中心に聴かせる箏四重奏Michiyo Yagi Talonや八木美知依トリオ、即興演奏を中心とした道場などを活動の核としている。

​

2026年、⟪愛知県芸術文化選奨 文化賞⟫を受賞。
